About the club
A community chess club in Superior, Colorado, founded in 2026, meeting every Thursday evening in one room with two things happening in it.
Who runs it
I'm Chuck Price. I've lived in Superior for 27 years and raised four children here, and for most of that time the nearest chess club was a drive away. That seemed like a silly thing for a town this size, so in 2026 I started one.
I'm a US Chess Tournament Director, which means I can run rated events properly and file the results. I am also, and expect to remain, a lifetime Chess Adult Improver — someone who took the game up seriously as an adult and is still getting better at it. I mention that because it is the whole idea behind the club. If you think chess clubs are rooms full of people who are already good, you would be wrong about at least one of us.
What I wanted was a club where a seven-year-old learning how the knight moves and four rated players grinding out a round robin could be in the same room on the same evening, and where both would feel like the point of the place. That is what a Thursday at The Stable Bar & Grill is.
The club's mission
Set out in the club's Constitution: to promote the enjoyment of chess, to develop stronger players, to cultivate sportsmanship and integrity, to build an inclusive and welcoming chess community, and to provide competitive formats that reward improvement, consistency and participation.
What the club values
The Constitution names five values, and they are not decoration — the Superior Grand Prix is built out of them.
Fairness means competition structured so that players regularly meet opponents of similar strength; it is why the league is played in rating-seeded Quads rather than one open swiss where half the field is out of its depth by round two. Growth means improvement is celebrated at every level, on the view that every player is capable of being stronger than they were yesterday — which is why the season pays a Most Improved award alongside the overall title, and why nine class champions take the largest single block of the prize fund.
Sportsmanship is the expectation that members conduct themselves with honesty, respect, humility and professionalism, at the board and away from it. Community is the club's belief that friendships, mentorship and volunteering are what make strong players, not the other way round. And excellence is the commitment to keep improving the tournaments, the league and the experience of being a member, rather than settling at whatever works this season.
The club exists to prove that meaningful competition and a welcoming room are not opposing goals. That claim is on the last page of the Constitution, and the two-track Thursday is what it looks like in practice.

Sponsors
The prize fund comes entirely from entry fees. Local businesses willing to sponsor a season prize — a class title, or one of the recognition awards — would let the club pay out more than $5 a head can manage, and would be credited here and on the season pages.

Our host
The club meets at The Stable Bar & Grill, 1 Superior Drive, Downtown Superior. They give us the room every Thursday, and the food and drink are a genuine part of why the evening works.
